It was built as part of a trade organization's donation to the city — all services were pro bono. It utilizes tilt wall construction as a demonstration of the potential of the technique. The experience is established by two major components set in juxtaposition: the celebratory and the contemplative. The celebratory "flag" panel acts as a boundary between the sacred and profane — the threshold to honoring the fallen and a celebration of those who serve and come to remember, with a formal crossing of a symbolic gap along the bridge. Each face of the pentagon tower is dedicated to a branch in the military, with each face's width indexing the size of the enrollment of the branch. The equilateral pentagon surrounding the tower compresses at the entrance. The outside wall shows a depiction of battle before one enters the contemplation space, which is dark, lit with an oculus above and a slit of vertical light on the south façade. A vertical beam of light traverses the engraved names on the interior walls throughout the day. It touches the plaques of the fallen, bringing them into the light each day. JUDGES' REMARKS: "The architecture plays up the sunlight beautifully. What a wonderful tribute to those that have sacrificed for us!" — Barbara Westbrook "Strength, resilience and poetry." — Rachel Ashwell HONORABLE MENTION (TWO-WAY TIE): Found, lead designer Aaron Rambo, for the patio at Local Foods, River Oaks Architect Wallace Garcia Wilson Architects, landscape architect GWH Landscape Architects, for the pool area at Hanover Post Oak by The Hanover Company PROJECT: Cadbury Series DESIGN CONCEPT: For this series, a solid surface shell encases a colorful molten resin center that evokes memories of a Cadbury Egg. The multifunctional Cadbury stool consists of three pieces: one resin and two solid stools; each piece can play the role of table or chair. Equipped with casters, the series is meant to be interactive, allowing you to group pieces together or split them apart, resulting in flexible furniture vignettes. Utilitarian applications are married with a sophisticated design centered around a resin core that captures and reverberates light. By flexibly grouping multiple sets together, one can imaginatively create diverse vignettes such as a long bench or multiple small seating clusters. The Cadbury table is a set of four pieces that can be brought together to form what appears to be a coffee table. Pulled apart, the pieces reveal gleaming "yolks" of color and fulfill multiple purposes that work exceptionally well as seating or table surfaces where space is limited. JUDGES' REMARKS: "The flexibility of design is quite unique and so much fun!" — Barbara Westbrook HONORABLE MENTION: Maison Maison, lead designer Suzanne Duin, for Custom Banquette PROJECT: Wisdom & Purity Collection DESIGN CONCEPT: Created from a rich oil painting by artist Kevin Peterson commissioned for this linen collection, Wisdom and Purity is a fantasy urban landscape that balances foxgloves, butterflies, a hummingbird and a majestic owl against a backdrop of graffiti hidden by its own beauty within the natural elements. The composition is layered, complex and mesmerizing. Karen Pulaski's initial intention with this collection was to create a throw with the ultimate canvas: fine Italian silk backed in cashmere. A simple repeating pattern would not do the fabric justice, so Pulaski commissioned a painting. The digital scan of the painting became the master file to generate many other products, including the patterns and borders of a complete bedding collection. New technology enabled digitally printing on 120-inch-wide goods encompassing all of the aspects of the designs. The Wisdom & Purity Collection includes a luxe silk-and-cashmere throw with silk accessory pillows and two distinct bedding collections, fall and spring. JUDGES' REMARKS: "Interesting development from painting to product and idea of extracting elements from the original piece for various products." — Rachel Ashwell HONORABLE MENTION: MaRS, Mayfield and Ragni Studio, lead designers Kelie Mayfield and Erick Ragni, for the DD Series of custom carpets originally designed for the W Dallas Victory Hotel
