STEWART COHEN MARK MCWILLIAMS GARDEN: OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE, GARDEN, OR POOL FIRST PLACE: MESA DESIGN GROUP, LANDSCAPE DESIGNER MARY ELLEN COWAN ARCHITECT FRANK WELCH & ASSOCIATES PROJECT: Rockbrook Residence DESIGN CONCEPT: The Rockbrook Residence balances the manmade and the natural with delicately calibrated compositions that draw from principles of classical and modern landscape architecture. The crisp geometries define the courts. Terraces and walkways are softened with textural native plantings and juxtaposed against soft rolling creek banks and wooded backdrops. The first view of the garden is the Palladian-style villa motor court framed with concrete walls that contain and define the space. A reflective fountain, low water wall and zinc urns greet visitors at the front entry. The rear grounds offer multiple gardens, including a small terrace with rain bench and chairs, as well as a planter-seat wall alongside the play lawn. The larger back-terrace garden and walkway break down to the verdant green lawn panels, where a small pool bath off to the side serves as a connection between the pool terrace and gardens beyond. A negative-edge elevated pool intrudes into the natural setting and blurs the division between the pool and creek below. Permeable lawn and mulch paths circulate around the site, offering varied experiences through the cedar grove, creek and limestone ledges. A simple, narrow wood- and-steel bridge offers long views from above and crosses the creek to a more secluded family garden with a circular seating area and fire bowl nestled among evergreen plantings. JUDGES' REMARKS: "Modern, chic, very well-suited to the architecture and surrounding landscape. Beautifully chosen materials, beautiful undulating lines and creation of outdoor spaces." — Brian McCarthy "Fluid. Great big picture here." — Mary McDonald RUNNER-UP: Kirsten Kelli, lead designers Kirsten Fitzgibbons and Kelli Ford, for Turkish Spa/Pool BEST IN FURNITURE DESIGN FIRST PLACE: DEGARRIO METAL STUDIO, DESIGNER HUMBERTO DEGARRIO BEST IN FURNITURE DESIGN FIRST PLACE: PERENNIALS FABRICS, DESIGNER AND PRESIDENT ANN SUTHERLAND AND DESIGN TEAM PROJECT: Alpha Table DESIGN CONCEPT: The Alpha Table, designed and fabricated by Humberto Degarrio, is hand-hammered solid steel bars with a honed black granite top. It measures 30 inches in diameter and stands 24 inches high, with a substantial weight of 250 pounds. DeGarrio wanted to break away from his typical application of the smooth, predictable appearance of steel in his pieces. Seeking a different expression of the material, he transformed 20 footers of solid steel into a textural, sculptural composition using his signature hammering technique. JUDGES' REMARK: "Lovely honesty of the material. In itself, a new interesting design creation." — Robert Couturier RUNNER-UP: Wisteria, designer Jerri Hobdy, for the Alton Trestle Desk PROJECT: Kidding Around Collection DESIGN CONCEPT: Perennials Luxury Performance Kidding Around collection celebrates the irreverent nature of childhood and is perfect for canvasing a playroom or furbishing a college dorm.
