G reenwood King's beautiful HQ The Lobby played host to lectures and book signings for design heavyweights: interior designer Brian McCarthy and principals John Ike, Tom Kligerman, and Joel Barkley of architectural firm Ike Kligerman Barkley. Brian McCarthy began his storied career as an assistant to Albert Hadley in 1983 and later became a partner in the venerable firm. He opened his own firm in 1992 and is a member of the Architectural Digest AD 100 list and the Elle Décor A-List. Along with friend/designer Bunny Williams, McCarthy chronicled life and the work of the top designers that began careers at the fabled Parish-Hadley, in his new book Parish-Hadley Tree of Life: An Intimate History of the Legendary Design Firm (Stewart, Tabori & Chang). Lovers of Parish-Hadley's trademark Park Avenue style of fringe, leather sofas and oversized ottomans turned out in droves to hear McCarthy, in from New York, speak on all things Albert and his own design philosophy. Spotted: Greenwood King's Julie Greenwood, Linda King and Elaine Ellender; interior designers Ben Johnston, Isabel Greiner, Laura Weaver, Karen Tennant, Paula Paine, and Valerie Greiner. San Francisco- and New York-based Ike Kligerman Barkley is known as one of the most prominent architectural firms in the States — the firm has been honored with the Julia Morgan and Stanford White Awards from the Institute of Classical Art and Architecture and consistently holds a place on the Architectural Digest AD 100 list. Principals John Ike, Tom Kligerman and Joel Barkley came to town to discuss their new book, The New Shingled House (The Monacalli Press), and shingle-style architecture and its infinite flexibility — ranging from richly historic to sculptural and experimental. On the scene: Ruth Davis, Bill Curtis, Carol Barden, Cliff Helmcamp, Kay O'Toole, Jerry Jeanmard, Janet Gust, and Becky Birdwell. Smith, who originally hails from Tyler, Texas, the self- proclaimed Rose Capital of the World, flew in from NY to sign his new tome and impart sage advice, such as, "Buy several flower types in a single color, put them in an attractive vase, and they are destined to look fabulous." Done!
