A s like most things, the definition of fashion is evolving. Contemporary art, fashion and design have collided so much in their ability to influence and engage us that they are nearly one and the same. In this issue — typically reserved for spring fashion — we see those worlds gloriously intertwined. We go one-on- one with Helmut Lang as the artist best known for his fashion label challenges and inspires with a show of his sculpture at the Dallas Contemporary, beginning Friday, April 15. We go inside the tony house of an art collector who carefully found a way to build a home that could contain her collection without sacrificing personal style and requirement for comfort. We catch up with the six women serving as ambassadors for the MTV Re:Define art auction and gala (save the date: Friday, April 8) and learn that it is their wide and varied connections to the worlds of art, fashion and philanthropy that make them best suited to spearhead one of our city's brightest fund-raisers. Fashion features have always been more than just a presentation of trends, but works of art all their own — and this month's is no exception. The story, which begins on page 38, combines the inimitable eye of photographer Claudia Grassl with the visionary styling of Andrew Bayer, all led by art director Michelle Aviña, who each month boldly finds ways to push our perception of visual beauty. In a world where being fashionable means more than just dressing well, I hope this month you are inspired to embrace all things that add aesthetic value to the world in which we live, be it the art you collect, the carefully designed buildings you are accustomed to seeing, or the choices you make when planning your spring wardrobe. After 22 years, PaperCity Dallas and Houston will be perfect bound, beginning with the September issue. When I began PaperCity all those years ago, W magazine had recently transitioned from a large format, as PaperCity is doing now, into perfect bound. W magazine came out twice a month and was filled with a wonderful cocktail party of people, social, fashion, art and design. I mourned the loss of this oversized lively mix and patterned PaperCity after it. As a few of you may remember, the name for the first few years was The Paper, but the moniker was not able to be copyrighted, so we transitioned into PaperCity. In this new bound iteration, the paper stock was of utmost concern, and with the help of our magnanimous and patient printer, Trend Offset Printing, we have secured a perfectly lovely heavy paper for the cover and a substantial interior paper that feel modern and luxurious. Next step was to inform national and local advertisers. Publisher Monica Bickers, style editor Francine Ballard and I flew to New York to meet with current advertisers — Hermès, Cartier, Chanel, Tom Ford, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana and more — to present the mock-up and begin the long negotiations over ad placement, the joy (that they are running ads) and the bane (who is before whom in the magazine) of all publishers. Every fashion and jewelry house we met with was thrilled about the change and secured double- page ad spreads for the September launch issue. We hope you will also be thrilled with the new physical format, as well as the increased number of pages in each issue for more design, art, fashion, social, food and travel. Until then, I'll savor the end of an era and reflect on the many ways for which the broadsheet pages of PaperCity will no longer be useful: gift wrapping, table coverings, art installation, dress making, wallpaper — all imaginative applications by our readers. Yes, fabric. Two years later, the trio launched a collection of scented candles that would forever shape the style world's obsession with fragrance. Imagine any fashionable home without at least one of Diptyque's inimitable Baies candles. C'est impossible. The newest Diptyque boutique opens this month at NorthPark Center, paying homage to the original Paris flagship, with sleek wood floors, wall coverings in malachite and a design spun from the famous Diptyque candle label, a mirrored perfume station and rainbow- hued paper-wrapped candles behind the register. Dyptique's offerings are deep — candles, perfumes, diffusers and skincare products — so we queried managing director Donna DiDonato for her must-haves. "The Baies candle and its Baies Noire counterpart, moisturizing Nourishing Cleansing Balm and Eau des Sens eau de toilette," she responds, the latter launching globally just in time for the Dallas debut. Of Eau des Sens, DiDonato says, "It's inspired by the confusion of the senses. And it is the epitome of how Diptyque approaches the creation of fragrance with absolute freedom."
