Ever discreet, the House of Harry Winston quietly opened its resplendent bronze doors with a cocktail reception hosted by Winston's VP of US retail Laurie Adorno, in from New York, and salon director Petra Martinez, who snipped the blue ribbon and ushered in guests for the coldest Champagne and finest caviar. Beauties tried on multi-carat sparklers with a disregard for price, embrac- ing Mr. Winston's sage advice: "People will stare. Make it worth their while." Established in 1932, Harry Winston's jawbreaker stones have included the 726-carat Jonker diamond and the 45.52 blue Hope Diamond, once owned by Louis XIV. Obsessed by the fiery orbs, Winston is said to have kept large diamonds in his pockets to caress throughout the day. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the Shah of Iran, Stavros Niarchos, and Aristotle Onassis, as well as Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor are Winston acolytes, sharing his love of the colorless carbon stones.
