letter editor HUNT SLONEM W e have just turned on the television in our conference room to watch the presidential in- auguration. The last time we gathered together like this was for the televised O.J. Simpson trial. Whether one voted for Trump or not, it's an auspicious occasion. We all hold hope — some are filled to the brim with the promise of a revitalized country, others are blowing on a wisp of hope. Our creative director, Michelle Avina, and editor Christina Geyer have spent weeks researching Jackie Kennedy for this issue, as Natalie Portman's portrayal in the film Jackie gathers steam. Our walls are lined with images of Jackie as a deb, young reporter and wife, First Lady, mother, widow, second wife, and book editor. Our vision for this month's fashion feature is not to recreate Jackie, but to imagine how she might look, act, feel in today's White House. The film offers up the tenet that Jackie was deeply complex with a quiet anxiety. But she exuded strength and tenacity and was braced with staunch self-discipline, as Geyer so eloquently writes on page 37. Here are lessons learned from Jackie. On style: "Always dress like a marble column," she said. Women's rights: "When Harvard men say they have graduated from Radcliffe, then we've made it." Marital advice: "The first time you marry for love, the second for money, and the third for companionship." Sex: "Sex is a bad thing. It rumples the clothes." Higher education: "If school days are the happiest days of your life, I'm hanging myself with my skip-rope tonight." Decorating: "I don't understand it. Jack will spend any amount of money to buy votes, but he balks at investing a thousand dollars in a beautiful painting." The importance of communication: "I want minimum information given with maximum politeness." And, her forecast for the future: "There will be great presidents again, but there will never be another Camelot." Holly Moore Editor-in-Chief holly@papercitymag.com 10
