38 ALTERNATIVE REALITY Dianne Cash When owners/curators Fode Sylla and Ladislas Mande opened their art and fashion retail space Blank Canvas in late April, it was the most fashionable happening Deep Ellum has seen in years. Danish designer and LVMH Prize finalist Cecilie Bahnsen showed her collection of black-and-white quilted coats and intricately embroidered dresses; Nao Yokoo, the master shoemaker behind Bespoke/Karibaki, oversaw a pop-up shop, taking customer's measurements and custom orders on the spot; and black- and-white prints from photographer Jill Furmanovsky's e-commerce site, rockarchive.com, lined the brick walls. Sylla and Mande's focus is on fine craftsmanship and introducing alternative designers and artists. The result is a honed collection of clothing, accessories, art, design objects, and beauty products, exhibited in a minimalist interior. Look for jewelry from Francesca Villa; fragrance and skincare products from Haeckels, that harvest seaweed from the English coast; and late architect Zaha Hadid's 2016 collection of bone china and ceramic home wares.
