SALIENT FACTS. 16 R emember that catchy Southwest Airlines slogan we all loved in the '80s, "The Company Plane"? When the web address of the same name became available a few years back, a local jet charter captain bought it. He claims he had no clue what he'd do with it, only that it came with a history and responsibility. In the years that followed, and as he found himself helping more and more friends and family members book charter flights, it dawned on him that there was a bigger need to advise individuals and companies on the sometimes daunting task of finding safe, efficient jet charters. Also absent in the market was quality communication between aviation companies and those in the back of the plane. When he's not demanding that we stay in budgets or app roving a major ad contract (both of which he still does, though often these days, while on the road), PaperCity president Jim Kastleman is also captain on a fleet of Lear 60s. Now, as editor of TheCompanyPlane.com, he not only brings the perspective of a qualified, safety-obsessed Airline Transport Pilot, but that of a luxury lifestyle journalist. Want to know in which private air terminal to park your jet in Santa Barbara or Cabo (or, as seen in this issue on page 34, where to stay in Cabo)? How about an explanation as to why you Just Ring the COMPANY PLANE I n October 2000, we profi led a new crop of museum and non- profi t directors and curators who promised to remake Houston's cultural landscape, including re- cent hires at the Blaffer Gallery (Terrie Sultan), The Menil Collection (Ned Rifkin), and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (curator Valerie Cassel Oliver). Nearly 17 years later, the one who has remained the longest and committed the most to her institu- tion and our community is Cassel Oliver, now senior curator at the CAMH. So the news of her departure this month for a plum post — the Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the encyclopedic Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Rich- mond — is both exciting and bittersweet. Thanks to Cassel Oliver, the dialogue of diversity has been front and center, real- ized in such unforgettable CAMH shows A Fond Farewell: VALERIE CASSEL OLIVER as "Splat Boom Pow! The Infl uence of Comics in Contemporary Art" (2003) and "Radical Presence: Black Perfor- mance in Contemporary Art" (2012). Above all, she's been a champion of artists, curating surveys and retrospec- tives for seminal fi gures including late Fluxus master Benjamin Patterson, con- temporary painter Donald Moffett, and Houston's two-time Whitney Biennial talent, Trenton Doyle Hancock. Catch Cassel Oliver's fi nale for the CAMH, the career retrospective "Annabeth Rosen: "Fired, Broken, Gathered, Heaped," opening Friday, August 18; we predict the opening will serve as a big farewell bash, with the curator returning for the occasion. For our exit interview with Cassel Oliver, who is also a Getty Fellow and winner of the David C. Driskill Prize for contributions to African-American art history, head to papercitymag.com.
