121 its first by-appointment showroom in New York earlier this year, the luxury online retailer decorated its space with de Gournay's Earlham and Plum Blossom panels, then decided to make silk dressing gowns to match, for sale in a limited edition of custom colors for $1,995, through Moda Operandi's New York and London showrooms and online at modaoperandi.com. Also new: De Gournay's hand-painted chinoiserie bird-and-bloom patterns now grace a collection of limited-edition silk lamp shades. Each is made to order ($443 to $542) in de Gournay's Portobello, Askew, and Earlham designs. Despite all the recent d e v e l o p m e n t s , n o t h i n g speaks to de Gournay's iconic status more than the antique-green chinoiserie wallpaper found in Baroness Pauline de Rothschild's Paris apartment, as photographed in 1969 by Horst P. Horst for Vogue. The Baroness died in 1976, and the wallpapers were removed from the apartment after the death of her husband Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1988. They were last seen for sale at an antiques store in Paris in 1990. As part of de Gournay's extensive research into historic wallpaper installations, those rare-air panels have been recreated as the newest addition to the de Gournay library: Salon Vert, which references the dreamy, faded gardens depicted on the original 18th-century panels found in de Rothschild's grand private abode on rue Méchain.
