14 letter editor HUNT SLONEM T hree weeks after Harvey, and so many are still reeling. Among the devastation, small kindnesses stand out. One morning three days after Harvey, I was searching for an open Starbucks and found one on the Southwest Freeway. As I stood in line to pay, the barista told me, "Everything's free today." This was not due to the largesse of Starbucks, but because a man had come in earlier and purchased a gift card to cover the day's purchases. This small gesture has stayed with me because of the moment of surprise and joy experienced by every person in line. No one was immune to the thought and caring behind this act of kindness. As we move into October, our calendars are shifting. Many events have canceled or changed dates — Texas Contemporary Art Fair has bowed out this year due to evacuees in GRB, Legacy Community Health Luncheon is now a cocktail party at a later date this month (October 18). Catwalk dinner and fashion show is moving to a later date, and all productions and events through May 2018 in the Wortham Center have been canceled or have relocated to other venues. But the show must go on, and we look forward to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Oscar de la Renta exhibition opening and fashion show (October 5) and Grand Gala Ball (October 6); the International Women's Forum International Hall of Fame Awards Gala on October 27, with Hillary Clinton, and chaired by two of my favorite women-who-get-things-done, Susie Criner and Lauren Rottet; the always original Orange Show Gala, October 28, chaired by a quad of Texas artists — Carter Ernst and Paul Kittelson, and Magda and Ed Wilson; and some book signings with Lauren Rottet celebrating her new book (October 11), and at Decorative Center Houston Fall Market (October 25) with Jonathan Adler, Alexa Hampton, and Eddie Ross. We lost a full week in the production cycle of this issue, but as others have across the city, our team banded together and rode it out. But I do not ever want to hear the words "hunker down" again.
