64 UP BY REBECCA SHERMAN Brian Thoreen PADDLES FIRST HAUL FOR BRENT LEWIS, HERITAGE AUCTIONS' NEW DIRECTOR OF DESIGN B rent Lewis, who joined Heritage Auctions as director of design in May, spent a whirlwind summer traveling the country procuring treasures for Heritage's 20th & 21st Century Design auction, to be held Tuesday, October 24, in Dallas. His haul was substantial: more than 400 lots of mid- century furniture and decorative arts. "There will be a special focus on studio glass," he says. "We have many examples from Toots Zynsky, Dale Chihuly, and Harvey Littleton." Half the sale is devoted to the Jason Jacques Collection of important Art Nouveau and Art Deco pottery from Europe. Lewis developed an eye for modern design right out of college as former gallery director at Moss in New York. Before joining Heritage, he was director of Wright auction house and a VP and auctioneer at Christie's, both in New York. He admits that the Heritage auction in Dallas reflects his personal tastes. "I wanted to include some objects that are beautiful and substantial, and which complement an iconic design such as a chair by Hans Wegner or Eames," he says. "So you'll also see some incredible minerals and exquisite bamboo baskets." Look for furniture and accessories by designers Paul László, Hans Wegner, Isamu Noguchi, and Florence Knoll, along with Swedish mid-20th-century rugs.
