Lisa Collins Shaddock Restaurant BUZZ T he autumnal splendors of a suite of 13 canvases take up residence at the Meadows Museum at SMU in an exhibition that unravels the mysteries of a master of 17th-century Spanish painting. Jacob and His Twelve Sons, created by Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664) and dating from the 1640s, makes its way for the first time to America, leaving Auckland Castle in northeastern Great Britain, where the canvases have resided since a London auction in 1756. The lucky 18th-century bidder was Richard Trevor, the 54th Bishop of Durham, who acquired them for his palatial residence. He ran out of funds for Benjamin, so that canvas went to another collector, also in England. It's finally reunited with its "brothers" at the Meadows show. The life-size canvases depict the founders of the Twelve Tribes of Israel; the original owner is unknown. They were rescued by Auckland Castle Trust after church commissioners sought to sell one of the most famous cycles of religious paintings in the world in 2010. At the Meadows, decipher the secrets discovered by the conservators, a special team led by the Kimbell Art Museum. After the Meadows presentation, the cycle heads to The Frick Collection in New York, a co-organizer of the U.S. tour being undertaken while Auckland Castle is being restored.
