28 DINNER MUSIC SHELBY HODGE HITS THE HIGH NOTES. PHOTOGRAPHY DANIEL ORTIZ, WILSON PARISH. C ould there be a lovelier night for oenophiles, gourmands, and classical music lovers alike than the annual Houston Symphony Wine Dinner and Collector's Auction. With cham- pagne and wine in hand, the black-tie throng contemplated more than 130 wine lots that stretched across all tiers of the Jones Hall foyer. Bidding and schmoozing were fervent up to the moment the dinner bell rang — the signal for guests to find their tables on stage. The gala evening included a concert by a Symphony string trio and a grand dinner from City Kitchen, accompanied by impressive wines selected, as is tradition, by Lindy and John Rydman of Spec's. For many, the night served as intro- duction to the symphony's new executive director and CEO, John Mangum. Taking leading roles in the soirée musicale were chairs Elizabeth and Alan Stein, honorary chair Beth Madison, and Collector's Auction chair Bob Weiner. MUSICAL MENTORS: Symphony board president Janet F. Clark, Joella and Steve Mach, Gwen and Ed Emmett, Ann and Jonathan Ayre, Gina and Dr. Devinder Bhatia, Cora Sue and Harry Mach, Ishwaria and Vivek Subbiah, Omana and Sam Abraham, Susan and Dick Hansen, Robin Angly and Miles Smith, Tara and David Wuthrich, Vicki West, and Ralph Burch.
