62 Besides the Austin unveiling this February, last month the gallery received the AIA 25-Year Award from the Houston chapter, a nod to the gallery building that has stood the test of time. Butler said of the architectural inspiration for his gallery, "I used to think it was Mies. The more that time passes, the more it seems as though it's my grandmother's cotton barn." The couple's collecting acumen for classical antiquities was also recently acknowledged. One of their treasures — a Hellenistic 4th-century BC terra-cotta bowl decorated with the head of Medusa — is featured in the now-on-view exhibition "Danger- ous Beauty" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, organized by the Met to showcase Medusa in art throughout the ages, from antiquity through Kara Walker (through January 6, 2019). Expect more grand things to come from Butler. "There are other projects in the works," he states. "I'm determined to do a synagogue with Richard Serra. I'm determined to do a chapel on the San Antonio River with Matt Kleberg." And if he does, these sacred places will be as thoughtful and poetic as his home and gallery. Donald Judd's set of four woodcuts, Untitled, 1994. Early- 19th-century American white-washed pine blanket box. To the right, a wrought-iron Carruthers cattle brand from Butler's ranching family in Eagle Pass, Texas. In the guest bedroom, Kachina dolls nest in a teak, fall-front secretary bookcase by Danish designer Peter Hvidt, circa 1950s. Above, a Helen Frankenthaler work on paper, flanked by a Sam Francis and stacked works by John Cage. Architect Marshall Reid designed the home with a skylight over the stair well that even on overcast days floods the interiors with light. Left, Matt Kleberg's Triumphal No Entry, 2017. Plans are in the works for Kleberg, a scion of the King Ranch dynasty, to design a chapel along the San Antonio River.
