16 WHEN SOCIAL MIGRATE THE BALLET BALL'S MOVE TO A LUSCIOUS TENT SWANS SHELBY HODGE FLIES IN FORMATION. PHOTOGRAPHY JENNY ANTILL CLIFTON, PRISCILLA DICKSON, WILSON PARISH. W ith inspiration from Houston Ballet's production of Swan Lake, the gilded set glided through a mise en scène rich with references to Tchaikovsky's famed work. Swans overhead, swans floating in a petite pool, and social swans dressed in feathered finery de- fined the Houston Ballet Ball, which was held in a party tent for the first time since the opening of Wortham Theater Center, thanks to Hurricane Harvey damage to the ballet's home. The Events Company was tasked with creating a wondrous Swan Lake setting by ball chair Hallie Vanderhider, herself channeling Odile in a Naeem Khan couture gown composed of 3,500 black coque feathers. (She would later change into a fuchsia Monique Lhuillier gown laced with ostrich feathers.) The dining tent was divided by a gauntlet of crystal chandeliers and mirrored walkway with white swan decor to the left, black swan decor to the right. Proceeds from the record-breaking soirée topped $1.4 million.
