100 W hen Lower Greenville Avenue staple Remedy shuttered more than a year ago, the space remained vacant for months while news swirled of an impending American-Chinese eatery taking its place. We knew the property would stay in the family with Remedy's founder Elias Pope (who also owns next-door neighbor HG Sply Co.) and GM Mark Stone, but we didn't anticipate just how much buzz it would generate. A mere eight days after it opened in late February, Gung Ho was packed — on a Wednesday night, no less. An adjacent bar with vibrant turquoise chairs and pendulous greenery, was also full. The only empty space was the upstairs nook one might remember from Remedy, which Gung Ho plans to convert into a bar area with no more than 10 seats and plenty of hard-to-find Asian spirits. Brewer's menu pulls influence from across the Asian continent (smashed Persian cucumbers, Taiwanese beef pozole, et al.), while Ragan's cocktails are unexpectedly complementary. Try the Top Hat (gin, Earl Grey tea, egg white, and dried lavender flower) and When Pigs Fly (fig-infused rum, five-spice syrup, and lemon and orange bitters), or order a $55 Scorpion punch bowl to share. Gung Ho is open seven days a week until 2 am, with a truncated menu served strictly at the bar after midnight. A dim sum brunch is also in the works.
