He also signed copies of his books, Bunnies and Birds, for admirers including host Laura Rathe and gallery director Hannah Rothrock with colleague Chris Carrillo; country-western crooner Pat Green; long-time Slonem collector Jayne Edison; artists Gil Bruvel and Kelley Devine; Julie Logan, who hosted Slonem at her home; and Tonya Riner. THE KID'S TABLE T he Children's Assessment Center raised a glass in the chic cube of Kirby Grove for the fifth annual Advocate Through Art Party. Chaired by Katie Dwan, Natasha Parvizian Gorgue, and Meredith Marshall, the benefit raised a record-breaking $510,000 toward CAC's mission of preventing child abuse and fos- tering safe spaces for Houston children. Rounding out the creative circle: mu- sic by DJ Pete, performances from Ad Deum Dance Company, and live painting by Kelley Devine and Tyler Ramsey. Auction chairs Heather Bulk, Loretta Horowitz, Natalie Mohtashami, and Jordan Seff curated a lineup of top lots such as Life Love by Shane Pennington, acquired by Mike Loya, and George Rodrigue's Blue Dog, which Kevin Lee took home. Aficionados: CAC direc- tor Elaine Stolte and board members Lauren Maloy, Ericka Bagwell, Paul Bragg, Diane Caplan, Allison Flikerski, Ursaline Hamilton, and Judge William Henderson; as well as John Dwan, Patrick Gorgue, Ben Marshall, Lucinda Loya, Heather and Matt Bulk, Dylan Seff, and special curator Yvonamor Palix. GALLERY GIRLS (AND BOYS) T he five big galleries at the 4411 Montrose building toasted their diverse lineups with a breezy eve- ning of art. Guerrero-Projects highlighted Jennifer May Reiland's bullring series, while Anya Tish unveiled photorealist and sculp- tural firearms by, respectively, Shannon Cannings and Corey Pickett. Barbara Davis presented the surreal drawings of Italian Andrea Bianconi; Cindy Lisica curated Ron Ulicny's sculpture influenced by The Home Depot; and David Shelton Gallery curated a group show including edgy telephone paintings by Keith Boadwee & Club Paint. Meanwhile, multimedia guru DJ Josh Zulu spun tunes on the patio. BEST OF THE YEAR A rt League Houston rolled out its always-anticipated gala, this year dubbed Myth & Symbol, at Hotel ZaZa. The epic art night — now in its fourth decade — bestowed Texas Artist of the Year honors upon two-time Whitney Biennial talent Trenton Doyle Hancock and named Lynn Goode Texas Patron of the Year. Chaired by Katharine Barthelme and Calia Pettigrew, the gala raised funds towards ALH's community-centered pro- gramming. The on-site auction featured more than 70 established and fledgling Houston and national artists; top lots in- cluded a Kermit Oliver painting nabbed by Lynn Goode; a cartoon-inflected painting by Hancock's wife, JooYoung Choi, won by Leigh and Reggie Smith; a Joseph Havel work on paper, snapped up by Wimberley collector Keith Coffee; and a Delita Martin painting acquired by Brian Walker. Emcee artist Emily Peacock welcomed 350 deep-pocketed collector-types, while the awards ceremony was introduced by Valerie Cassel Oliver (formerly of the CAMH, now a lead curator at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts) and Aurora Picture Show founder Andrea Grover (now di- rector of Guild Hall East Hampton). The Artist and Patron of the Year awards were crafted by Patrick Turk, Terrell James, and John Calaway. In the art crowd: ALH's VP Laynie Bracewell, executive director Jennie Ash, and collectors Rob Greenstein, Marlene Marker, James Bell, and Sean and Rebecca Marshall.
