OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. 16 A very stylish new gym in the River Oaks/ Upper Kirby area brings the tranquility of nature and sleek open-air architecture to your workouts. Naturally FIT G et Bambúed: Yo u s i m p l y can't get better than the Starn Twins' "Big Bambú," the summer sizzler at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which builds upon the MFAH's history of immersive sultry-month exhibitions that are both art smart and crowd pleasers. We don't want to give too much away, but prepare to navigate narrow bamboo catwalks in the soaring interiors of Mies van der Rohe's Law Building. This marks the first-ever indoor staging of Mike and Doug Starn's Buddhist-like parable for life. (For more on our take on the experience, visit paperpcitymag. com). The Starns are no stranger to Houston, having exhibited at FotoFest with their epic tree and leaf images, and in a group show at Barbara Davis Gallery back in the day. ("Big Bambú" through September 3, tickets and waiver online or at the museum; members free. Note: Rubber-soled shoes are required.). San Antone to Clint's Bequests: Mention the name Clint, and everyone in the Texas art world knows you mean Clint Willour, the long-time (and now retired) curator of Galveston Arts Center — and promoter of Texas' best and brightest. If that were Willour's sole calling card, it would be impressive, but his largesse to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is legendary. It's showcased in an exhibit that culls only one part of the thousands of photos and art books bestowed upon the MFAH thanks to his patronage during the past four decades (Beck Building, through October 14) … At Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the San Antonio scene is surveyed, as curators Dean Daderko and Patricia ART NOTES COURTESY THE ARTIST AND NICELLE BEAUCHENE GALLERY Daniel Rios Rodriguez's Egretta, 2017, at CAMH Restrepo mine some new discoveries for Houston audiences. Best bets are Lisette Chávez and Audrya Flores' provocative and humorous Angel Baby transvestite video and Ana Fernandez's paintings that revel in the beauty of taquerias and strip centers (through August 5). Texas Quintet: Art League Houston unveils a trio of Texas talents. The minimalist string installation by Luisa Duarte (so Fred Sandback) provides a restrained bridge between The Dinner Table by Delita Martin (which begs for a meal to be served and a conversation begun) and the compelling '80s-era, religious-cult dance video unearthed by Seth Orion Schwaiger, which registers as Lawrence Welk with a does of Joel Osteen (all shows through July 21) … Houston artist Felipe Lopez's meditation on light and water nods to his heritage as a Cuban-American at Linda Clarke and Gus Kopriva's Clarke & Associates (through August 24). Paired with Lopez are the lens-based color abstractions of top collector Lester Marks, probably the first time in memory that an artist and his collector — who also makes art — have been presented within the same artspace. Catherine D. Anspon With 16,000 square feet of fitness options spread across two levels, The Preserve maintains, "that nature inspires fitness," says general manager Adam Horak. Fitness fanatic Molly Carter, who holds an MBA from The Rice University Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, founded The Preserve in response to the cinder-block feel of other Houston gyms. Architect Josh Jones has designed an upper deck for al fresco sunrise, sunset Hatha and Vinyasa yoga; a 25-meter pool and classes, personal training, weights, and machines are next to floor-to-ceiling windows with garden vistas and a lush, green atrium. Memberships are limited and include all classes — more than 60 are offered each week, starting as early as 5:45 am Mondays and Wednesdays. Options include HIIT classes, Tabata, five types of yoga, Pilates, indoor cycling, and kickboxing. "We're taking the boutique-style quality class instruction you would typically find at a studio and putting it all under one roof," Horak says.
