44 SEEING RED BY CHRISTINA GEYER. PHOTOGRAPHY TAMYTHA CAMERON SMITH. F unky. Fashionable. Artful. Avant-garde. Conversation-worthy. These words capture Dallas Contemporary and its roster of program- ming, which ranges from fashion exhibitions to insightful shows about thought-provoking issues. The same adjectives apply to the mu- seum's 40 th Anniversary Gala, or DC40, which capped off a busy week of celebrations. Guests at the Friday-eve event were thrilled to find that Headington Companies and The Joule hotel's new catering division were providing the dinner — a mix of dishes one might order at Headington's restaurants Sassetta, Mirador, and CBD Provisions. A cocktail-infused silent art auction kicked everything off; we spotted new Dallas Contemporary board member and artist Richard Phillips snapping an iPhone shot of his own work, which was up for bid that night. A gallery in the massive Design District space was transformed into a dining room for the evening, draped in scarlet and awash in red light, moody, to be sure — and the perfect setting for Erykah Badu, who performed halfway through dinner. Her sultry set could have been plucked right from the sexiest of underground jazz clubs. Onward to the next decade!
