ART + DECORATION 56 A rtist Judy Chicago, who created her epic feminist installation The Dinner Party in 1974, is having a resurgence. T h e m a s s i v e , triangular-shaped ceremonial banquet both shocked and amused people, with its porcelain dinner plates with raised motifs based on vulvar and butterfly forms. Her goal, she has said, was to ignite a serious dialogue about the richness of women's heritage. The Dinner Party has been housed at the Brooklyn Museum since 2007 and has 39 elaborate place settings commemorating more than D uring the early 19th century, French textile h o u s e B r a q u e n i é p r o v i d e d p r i n t e d cottons, silks, and hand-woven rugs to a rarefied clientele that included Emperor Napoleon III, Tsar Nicolas II, Victor Hugo, Frédéric Chopin, and the Rothschild family. Maison Pierre Frey purchased the family-owned company in 1991, along with a rich trove of historical designs, textile documents, carpet samples, and watercolor drawings. Pierre Frey's new collection, Comptoir d'Orient, draws on ancient Braquenié archives featuring exotic flowers, pineapples, and chinoiserie. The original designs have been updated in bolder colors and scale, and are rendered in silk, cotton prints, embroidery, and épinglé velvets.
