Credited as the artist who shattered the barrier between photography and fine art, Sherman's multi-million-dollar auction records are propelled by the now-iconic "Untitled Film Stills" series. Forty years later, these proto-feminist, photo-based artworks are more topical than ever, skewering proscribed gender roles and sending up cinematic tropes of Hollywood heroines. Besides culling in the Lens At fondAtion Louis Vuitton the film stills, Fondation louis vuitton's blockbuster features 300-some works, alternately vulnerable or visceral images with the photographer as protagonist. Highlights encompass her emblematic Fashion, History Portraits, Disasters, Headshots, Clowns, Society Portraits, Murals, and Flappers, while pulling back the curtain on the latest artfully posed portraits casting herself in the (dis)guise of males or couples. Through January 3, at Fondation Louis Vuitton, fondationlouisvuitton.fr. Catherine D. Anspon T om Ford has built quite a reputation as a designer who knows what makes men and women tick. His latest batch of fragrances sound especially enticing — after all, nothing says come hither more than the right scent. Bitter Peach is said to "capture nectar-filled flesh at its bursting, luscious peak," with a fruit-floral mix of pêche de vigne and Sicilian blood orange oil. A touch of spice is added through cardamom oil and rounded out with notes of rum and cognac, and finished with sandalwood and vanilla. We find that the fruity intensity mellows over time — perfect for early fall. The Private Blend Oud Collection revisits one of Ford's most iconic scents, which was originally launched in 2007. He was one of the first to use expensive and rare oud essential oil as a primary ingredient. For 2020, he's added two fragrances to the Oud Collection: Private Blend Oud Fleur and Private Blend Tobacco Oud. While sharing the original's key elements of oud, sandalwood, and patchouli, each takes us on a different journey. Oud Fleur adds incense and rose for effect; Tobacco Oud blends herbs, flowers, and spice- laden tobacco to create a smooth and warm scent. Rounding out the latest creations is Ombre Leather. leathery, woody, and spicy, it mixes spicy cardamom and saffron with a floral touch and a strong aroma of leather for a layered and complex scent. This is a sophisticated fragrance that feels quite at home on a cold winter day. $134 to $350, at the Tom Ford boutique, tomford.com.
