F ayetteville's third new shopping destination unveiled to great success last October, selling out its wares in five days during the fall antiques shows. The Market at Park boasts an idyllic location steeped in local history. Beth Hruska Chapline (as in kolache HQ Hruska's Store & Bakery in Ellinger) is co-owner of The Market, which is equal parts homage to the past and source for contemporary finds. Chapline and her partners, daughter-in-law Laura MINDING THE {GENERAL} STORE: THE MARKET AT PARK IN FAYETTEVILLE A ustin restaurateur Simon Madera (Taco Flats, La Holly cantina) recently traveled east on 71 to try out a new smoked- meat concept where it makes the most sense: in small-town Texas — Smithville, to put a pin on it. Madera sagely recruited pitmaster Tony Olvera as his partner for Carne Lenta, translated as "slow meat," occupying the former Micklethwait BBQ space, in a building that once housed Vasek Automotive. Olvera, originally pitmaster at Micklethwait, is also a butcher — hence, Carne Lenta's unique melding of butcher shop, restaurant, speakeasy, and occasional live-music venue. Specialties of the house include barbacoa, picadillo, birria, carne guisada, and chorizo, proudly sourced locally, which is slow-roasted on-site in 1,000-gallon pits. On weekend evenings, a speakeasy kicks in; one Saturday a month, Texas legends such as singer/songwriter/bluesman Guy Forsyth perform. Carne Lenta, 114 Northeast 2nd St., Smithville, carnelenta.com. Catherine D. Anspon WHAT'S COOKING IN SMITH- VILLE D on't let the name Cat Spring Collection fool you. The newly minted, under-the-radar art space in the tiny hamlet of Cat Spring was launched by savvy Texas art collectors Nora and Bob Ackerley. Painters are chiefly showcased at their by-invitation venue, with salon talks planned, Bob Ackerley tells PaperCity. In the inaugural exhibition, we sighted a lineup culled from the couple's personal CAT SPRING KUNSTHALLE Chapline and pal Renee Koch, have transformed the century-old Hruska family general store, which is nestled in a grove of trees adjoining an 1898 Czech dance hall (available for weddings and event rentals), into a light- washed emporium. Beth tells PaperCity that The Market at Park will be back in March for the antiques shows and plans to host a cocktail to welcome shoppers.
