Rebecca Sherman W hen the opportunity a ro s e f o r B i l l Walker to move his menswear emporium from Uptown Park to Post Oak Plaza, he reimagined the store through a modern lens. After training at Sakowitz and Norton Ditto, Walker opened his first store more than 40 years ago — Walker-Jones, which later transitioned to its current moniker. The new iteration of Bill Walker Clothier maintains the tradition of made- to-measure suiting with luxurious menswear fabrics from Loro Piana, Holland & Sherry, and Scabal while introducing gear to appeal to a new generation. The move came in concert with a gradual succession plan that partners Walker's daughter, Shelley Walker Caldwell (after a long career at Harold Powell Clothing) with menswear veteran Philip Linkous, who spent his earlier years at Ralph Lauren and Leslie and Company. Longtime denizens of the shop can rest assured that labels such as Hickey-Freeman, Martin Dingman Belts & Shoes, Geo. F. Trumper's of London, Royal Lyme of Bermuda, Jack Victor, and Stenströms of Sweden shirtmakers mix smoothly with Peter Millar Sports Wear, Arnau of Barcelona, Samuelsohn, 34 Heritage Jeans, and other names. Architect Carlo Di Nunzio of Di Nunzio Architecture was engaged to interpret the trio's desire for a fresh approach to the haberdasher's honored tradition. The result is a clubby nod to English ambience — requisite paneling included — with a cozy seating area on one side of the store and a flat- screen TV and modern chairs on the other, speaking volumes to Di Nunzio's perceptive approach to the project.
