A storied, palatial mansion at 2115 River Oaks Boulevard that gained international fame as the residence of Baron Ricky di Portanova and Baroness Alessandra di Portanova recently sold in a mega sale. Once upon a time, the mansion was a typical 1950s River Oaks home. That was before multi- millionaire di Portanova, scion of oilman Hugh Roy Cullen, transformed it. W hen designing the "front door" for the East River mixed-use development under construction near downtown, the last thing the developers of The Laura at East River wanted to do was erect a run-of-the-mill apartment building. So they looked to Houston's history, the new land's easy access to lush green spaces, and even the sunset views to create a unique place. "It's the ability to be in an urban environment but still be outdoors, with livable green spaces, a trail system and outdoor things that users in general appreciate now more than ever," says Larry Sloan of Houston-based Midway, which is building the 150-acre project. As much a life teacher as a basketball coach, Kelvin Sampson keeps pushing his University of Houston basketball team into the national spotlight. Now he's getting some overdue recognition of his own, with many of his coaching peers advocating for his induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
