Martha Turner built one of Houston's great real estate firms, but she also built up, bolstered, and helped create many businesswomen — which is part of why her death at age 81 brought such a heartfelt outpouring. "Martha Turner had a gift for making everyone feel special," says Walter Bering. "She was the most genuine person I have ever met." Read more at papercitymag.com/martha. J onathan Coon is a serial entrepreneur — but an unlikely real estate developer. He first gained notice as the college student founder of 1-800 CONTACTS, selling contact lenses for cheaper out of his dorm than the major eye stores did. That homespun operation ended up disrupting the entire contact lens industry, changing federal law and growing into a behemoth that Coon sold for $900 million. He later financed the indie classic Napoleon Dynamite. Now, Coon is developing the Four Seasons Private Residences Lake Austin, a 145- acre land with 179 future residences on a spectacular hillside that aims to revolutionize lake living. Take the $15 million funicular elevator — glass enclosed and air conditioned — that will whisk homeowners down to the lake. Read more at papercitymag.com/lake-austin. Wild — the new coffee, alcohol, and CBD spot at 2121 North Shepherd in the Heights — is often buzzing. No pun intended. The dispensary, dubbed the Bud Bar, boasts one of the largest selections of hemp products in Houston. "We were looking to create a unique experience for our customers, while also being able to educate on the healing properties of CBD," says co-owner Adyson Alvis. Read more at papercitymag.com/wild. Yet the throwback vibe and cocktails still flow. From a River Oaks classic to secret garden retreat downtown, this is your guide to the world of covert cocktails.
