N e w l y u n v e i l e d shopping Mecca 5 5 0 M a r k e t launched to great fanfare at the Fall Antiques & Design Show, and it's already an exciting addition to Round Top's roster of year-round venues. This is a big-picture project by Landmark Hospitality Group (also owners of the iconic Stone Cellar and Round Top Dance Hall). The new Thursday- through-Sunday retail destination is sited in a handsomely revamped warehouse between the original Stone Cellar bar and restaurant and the circa-1900 dance hall. Isaac Preminger Architecture & Design (known for such stylish Houston haunts as The Annie, Turners, and Emilia's Havana) was enlisted as architect by Landmark's founding partners Cathy Mace Frietsch and Steven Frietsch. For interior design, the duo tapped a connection close to home: Kathy Frietsch, Steven's talented sister, a previous creative merchandiser of Houston's Thompson + Hanson, then Wisteria. 550 Market's anchor tenant, Cathy Mace Frietsch, brings on couture country with Rockabilly Baroness, stocked with bespoke western wear and handmade custom boots and more, in partnership with The Tres Outlaws Boot Company. At the opposite end of the venue, Kathy Frietsch curates Fritch, featuring her take on antiques, art, and new artisan finds including artworks by talents in Koelsch Gallery's Houston stable, as well as Franny Koelsch's fashion brand, the made-in-Houston Ears of Buddha. Another standout: the antique textiles from New Orleans-based B. Viz Design, known for reborn ecclesiastical raiment, panels of Fortuny, and stunning embroidered Central Asian Suzanis some repurposed as jackets and dusters. The opulent eye of Houston designer Dennis Brackeen is in evidence at Moxie with eccentricities from around the globe. Returning for the spring show is Clint Orms Engravers & Silversmiths with handcrafted belt buckles, bolos, bracelets, and other cowboy classics. 550 N.
