OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. H op Along: Any opening with the charismatic Hunt Slonem in attendance is an occasion. So, calendar this date: Friday, January 13, 5 to 8 pm, when the designer darling, preservationist, and prolific museum- collected painter comes to town for an exhibit at Laura Rathe Fine Art in River Oaks District, accompanied by a talk and signing of his latest volume, Butterflies (G Editions, $200). Expect classic canvases focused on his signature bunnies, as well as a menagerie of vibrant birds and butterflies (through February 11). Painter of Light: We can't think of a more buoyant way to start off the New Year than basking in canvases imbued with light. Cue Dallas-based Jay Shinn, returning stateside after an acclaimed survey at the Till Richter Museum in Buggenhagen, Germany. For Texas audiences, Moody Gallery unveils Shinn's latest canvases, based upon previous light works. (One of the artist's most epic creations, the "Candyland" series with projected light, is in the Bush IAH permanent collection.) At Moody, Shinn's "The Light Within" opens Saturday, January 14, 1 to 5 pm, with an artist talk at 4 pm (though February 25). Catherine D.
