A n heirloom c h a i r a n d s t o o l b y E t h i o p i a n American artist and industrial designer Jomo Tariku — a pioneer of modern African design — has just been acquired by the Dallas Museum of Art. The Nyala chair, made of ebonized ash, is inspired by the distinctive horns, hind legs, and white spots of the Nyala antelope, which is native to the Bale region in the Ethiopian highlands of East Africa, where the designer grew up. The Mukecha stool/table references traditional African mortars and pestles, and its colorful banding is influenced by neck rings adorning bronze busts from The Kingdom of Benin. Tariku, who studied industrial design in the U.S., has works in museums around the country, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. dma.org.
