Years as a Beloved Houston Destination Bering's Celebrates 85 PAPERCITY PROMOTION F or decades, Bering's has helped Houston families celebrate weddings, holidays, new babies, and everyday life. More than a store, Bering's has been an integral part of Houston's story since 1940, backed by the retailer's values of adaptability, integrity, and service. Now, the storied retailer celebrates its 85th anniversary by looking back at its evolution — and forward, to its future. In 1846, John and Anna Bering sailed from Bremen, Germany, and eventually settled in Houston. By the late 1800s, August Charles Bering helped establish A. Bering & Bros., a lumber mill and retail yard near what is now Duchesne School. Over time, the family's ventures expanded into sashes, doors, furniture, tile, and hardware through entities such as Bering Manufacturing Co. Julius C. Bering co‑founded Bering‑Cortes Hardware in the 1880s, which grew into a major supplier of tools, stoves, cutlery, and electrical goods, solidifying the Bering name in Houston's commercial history. The lumberyard that would evolve into Bering's Hardware was launched in 1940 by August C. Bering Jr. after he founded the Bering Lumber Company. As Houston's suburbs expanded, August C. Bering III moved the business to its present Westheimer location in 1952. Over the following decades, the store continued to evolve with the needs of modern Houstonians: launching a gift shop in 1971, opening the Bissonnet location in 1988, adding a children's department in 2006, and introducing the Men's Shop in 2018. Bering's also entered the digital age with the launch of its full e‑commerce site in 2000. What started as a hardware store has evolved into a beloved destination for home essentials, fine gifts, stationery, gourmet kitchenware, and meaningful moments. Despite its evolution, however, Bering's has remained true to its identity: a locally owned, family‑run business deeply woven into the fabric of Houston since 1940. It now operates under the guidance of August C. Bering V. To mark its 85th anniversary, Bering's hosts a week‑long celebration Monday through Sunday, November 3 through 9, to thank the generations of Houstonians who have made Bering's part of their lives. Experiences include a friendly in‑ store mahjong tournament (open to all skill levels) to grill demos featuring top brands (including Big Green Egg, Weber, and Gozney) and a Mini Many Memories Station where you can create lasting heirlooms with your life‑celebration stationery such as wedding invitations or baby announcements. Further kitchen skills with a hands‑on knife skills class with Zwilling prior to holiday cooking, and attend a tree decorating class hosted by Bering's visual merchandiser and gift‑ shop buyer. Here's to another 85 years of helping Houstonians cultivate their most precious lifelong memories.
