All the hardware is from P.E. Guerin, the New York foundry established in 1857, where Kincaid worked through each piece with vice- president Martin Grubman. Doorknobs are hand-carved mahogany and faux ivory, bath levers are inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and a hidden bar down the hallway has sunflower hardware, a nod to the couple's home in France, with basin handles cast from a lemon. The result is an apartment as personal as it is polished, and even now, the thrill of arriving hasn't faded. "We pinch each other. We just can't believe it," the wife says. "We're euphoric when we get there." Top left and right: The kitchen nods to the '20s – '30s with streamlined fittings and a stenciled checkerboard floor. Custom cabinetry by John B. Murray. Marble countertops with a traditional lug detail. The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission approved lowering the service window to allow room for a banquette in the kitchen. Walls in Farrow & Ball Teresa's Green. Chelsea Textiles fabrics. A leather-clad door in the kitchen with P.E. Guerin hardware. In the kitchen, a window seat doubles as a cafe perch.
