Martyn Lawrence Bullard Summer Quartet: Group views are the way to go this month, with talents ranging from Texas notables to emerging nationals, all hallmarked by thoughtful curation. Begin at Kirk Hopper Fine Art. New hire/assistant director Giovanni Valderas rolls out "Swelter," where top notes of edge and provocation are like thunderheads on the horizon. Watch for promising new painters, especially Shayne Murphy and Eduardo Portillo, paired with mid-careers including Whitney Biennial-exhibited Annette Lawrence and Linda and Ed Blackburn (through August 14) … At Galleri Urbane, assistant director Adrian Zuniga continues last year's wildly praised juried contest and opens the call to the broad category of American painters. Zuniga, an artist himself, finely honed the show down to nine who manifest new directions in painting (August 8 – September 5). As with Kirk Hopper's program, we applaud the idea of asking artists to curate these fresh shows … At Erin Cluley Gallery, "Summer" rounds up a power of 10, manifesting owner/director Cluley's eagerly watched vision and encompassing a wide geographic swath that tilts to Dallas and Baltimore. Hot talents include Zeke Williams and Kevin Todora, both based in Dallas, alongside Paris, Texas, gent Chivas Clem of the notorious car-wash video (through August 29) … Prepare for "Chaos" at Ro2 Downtown. The third iteration of this annual small-works show culls more than 100 gallery artists and guests for sultry collecting drama (August 1 – September 12). Sargent and Friends: The Kimbell Art Museum provides a respite from the dizzying contemporary action with "Botticelli to Braque: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland." The exhibition brings together iconic paintings from three Edinburgh museums. Compelling works include a sublime moment from the late 15th century provided by Botticelli's scene of the Virgin kneeling over a sleeping Christ child; proto-modern master Gauguin's island-life view Three Tahitians, 1899; the skating prowess of Reverend Robert Walker, captured by Henry Raeburn, circa 1795; and patrician sylph Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, depicted in a canvas dating from 1892 — a glide of pigment and personality by John Singer Sargent (through September 20).
