HIGH-FIVING Every industrial inch of the Dallas Contemporary was tapped for the fall opening of five exhibitions from internationally recognized artists. Executive director Peter Doroshenko and director of exhibitions Justine Ludwig invited guests to Walk the Line, a performance piece by Nadia Kaabi-Linke that was commissioned by the Contemporary. To illustrate the artist's journeys across international borders, community members wrapped string the length of the Texas-Mexico border around two concrete pillars. Pakistani artist Bani Abidi presented two site- specific video works: Funland (Karachi Series II) and Unforeseen Situation, another Dallas Contemporary commission. Also on view was a series of paintings by Brazilian painter Adriana Varejão, Kindred Spirits, which explores cultural identity and colonialism. Artist Jason Willaford presented Sorry, this will only take a minute — an edgy commentary on time and the modern obsession with being busy, which he created as an artist in residence at the Elaine de Kooning house and studio in East Hampton, New York. (The de Kooning house, which is owned by Dallas Art Fair co-founder Chris Byrne, was recently renovated and opened to artists.) Synchrodogs, a collaboration between photographers Tania Shcheglova and Roman Noven, consumed the side gallery. Their series of images, Supernatural, was an ethereal visual of self-exploration in nature. Seen pondering: Michelle Moussa, Muffin Lemak, Ed Beardsley, Roksolana Karmazyn, and Terri Sexton. SECRET-KEEPING Last summer, members of the Dallas Museum of Art's Junior Associates received a mysterious invitation to the group's Director's Cut Reveal Party and Fundraiser with few details provided. Days before the event, the plot thickened: Ticket- holders received an unidentified address. When the date arrived, the location was revealed: an empty space in an unfamiliar wing of the Harwood International offices, which event designer Todd Fiscus transformed into a speakeasy with cocktails dubbed Old Fashions and Art-tinis. Event co- chairs Rachel and Michael Osburn and Junior Associates co-chairs Erica Denton and John McCarley kept the surprises coming — the biggest being the news that in 2016, the Junior Associates will host the Late Night Party at the DMA's crowning spring gala, Art Ball (save the date: Saturday, April 23, 2016), replacing the Junior Associate's longtime An Affair of the Art fund-raiser. Since 1994, the young professionals have raised more than $2 million for the DMA through their annual event. In the know: Shelby Foster, Matt Cantu, Daniel Lorente, Aja and Kris Martin, Michael Seay, Francesco Mainetti, Reed Gibbs, Phillip Duffy, Daniel Castillo, and Hanna and Scott Claybrook. EYE-POPPING To commemorate the opening of its "International Pop" exhibition, the Dallas Museum of Art rolled out a VIP party of a different color — kaleidoscopic neon. It was a vibrant theme to debut the show, which chronicles the global emergence of Pop Art during the 1960s and early 1970s. Organized by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the exhibition (on view through January 17, 2016) bursts with history. Revolutionary works by some of the greatest proponents of Pop Art — Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann — dot the DMA's walls, including crowd pleasers Ed Ruscha's Standard Station, Amarillo, Texas, 1963, and Ushio Shinohara's Oiran, 1968. The Hamon Atrium also proved a compelling destination, as guests flocked to its light-bright photo booth with apropos props, including a Mini Cooper with the Union Jack flag plus Lichtenstein-esque comic- book text bubbles and polka dots. DJs S.O.U.L.JAH and Justin Bell were in-theme additions to the Pop- worthy evening. Pop stars: Claire Dewar, Marlene and John Sughrue, Marguerite Hoffman, Grace Cook, John McCarley, Rachel Riley, Lou Lehman, and Taylor Zakarin.
