HOLLY SMITH & AUSTIN ALVIS MOSIE HACKETT & MICHAEL SoRELLE H ouston Christian High School set the stage for high school sweethearts Holly Smith and Austin Alvis. During family travels to the Alvises' Aspen home, says Holly, "I remember them telling me, 'If you're going to be an Alvis one day, you must learn to ski with us', so I had private skiing lessons." Austin (now a commercial real estate broker with his father's company NewQuest Properties) proposed to Holly (a program manager for her family's nonprofit, The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, the bride's grandparents) at a picnic on Lovers Beach during an impromptu trip to Nevis Island. The wedding was planned, to take place, naturally, at Houston Oaks Club (the groom's parents, Steve and Marci Alvis, are partners in the country club with John and Terri Havens and Chuck and Kim Watson). A six-week tour of Europe followed. M osie Hackett and Michael SoRelle's union was nothing short of destiny. Each is the youngest of four children, and they grew up mere blocks from one another in River Oaks. Michael lived on Del Monte Drive, Mosie on Pelham, and while they both attended the University of St. Thomas, their paths never crossed. After more than 20 years of just-misses, fate intervened December 2012. An introduction at a friend's home led to a Thanksgiving wedding in 2015. The prenuptial fête commenced with a Thanksgiving dinner accompanied by music, football and board games, followed by a rehearsal dinner at Tony's. NOTES FROM A WEDDING DIVINE DETAILS NOTES FROM A WEDDING WEDDING BY JAILYN MARCEL • Rehearsal Dinner: The fête served as a dual celebration, honoring the newlyweds as well as 39 years of marriage for the parents of the bride, Maureen and Jim Hackett. • Something Borrowed: The bride wore a pearl bracelet, a family heirloom from her grandmother, as well as her mother's flower- shaped, diamond drop earrings. The mother of the bride gifted the couple with two diamond wedding bands, which is a tradition in the bride's family. • Bridesmaids: Bridal attendants also wore Monique Lhuillier, swapping wedding white for navy. • Bubbles: Artist John Palmer decorated a pyramid of champagne splits — a gift from the bride's oldest sister. • Last Course: Miniature cookies and a wall of River Oaks Donuts were a parting treat. • Chapel: The couple wed in front a 15th-century chapel at Houston Oaks, that was transported from France piece-by-piece, then reassembled at the club. • Bride detail: The bride wore pearl-encrusted Rene Caovilla sandals gifted by her grandmother during a shopping date at Tootsies, ensuring she could comfortably dance all night. • Fleurs: The unpredictability of nature inspired each floral arrangement, resulting in a luxuriant mix of blooms. Floral artist Alicia Rico made sure no two arrangements were alike. • Invitation: Papellerie created an invitation with an easy-going aura: "Southern Coat and Tie – flats and wedges welcome." • Dazzler: The bride's ring was stored in a velvet box embossed with a gold A for Alvis, inside a second box labeled "The Mrs. Box." • Dinner: Houston Oaks provided dinner stations, but a special outpost featured Uchi chefs. • Cocktails: L.A.-based bartenders The Grand Bevy served craft cocktails. The bride's favorite: Pink Tequila Fizz, a sweet blend of tequila, grapefruit, mint reduction and fresh lemon. Groom's choice: The Humidor, a sipping cocktail with bourbon, tea, vanilla syrup, bitters and lemon oils. • First dance: A friend, Jason Allen, played Tim McGraw's "My Best Friend" on his acoustic guitar.
