W hen author, television star and self-proclaimed anti-trend guy Tim Gunn came to town to speak at the Chick Lit Luncheon, sharing fashion dos and don'ts and behind-the-scenes scoop from Project Runway, he made it work in spades. On the heels of his latest book release, Tim Gunn: The Nutty Professor, he held court for two fashionable days — first, at a private cocktail reception hosted by honorary chair Brian Bolke at Forty Five Ten, then as keynote speaker at the Chick Lit Luncheon benefitting Community Partners of Dallas. Wardrobe proved crucial both days, as many would have some quality time with Gunn himself — and one dare not disappoint the master of style. "The ladies who lunch were shopping to impress Tim," said Paige McDaniel, CEO of Community Partners of Dallas. Kimberly Whitman, Southern Living editor at large and the recently appointed fashion ambassador for NorthPark Center, conducted the luncheon tête-à-tête, where Gunn remarked: "You people in Dallas … I am in awe of you!" The convo ranged from pre-fashion details of his life — Gunn wanted to be an architect before he embarked on a career in fashion — to style advice. Scott's fans — tons of them — are obsessed with his conceptual, Pop Art-like designs for Moschino and his own men's and women's wear collection, Jeremy Scott. Well before the signing began, a lengthy line formed, many clutching Scott's Windex-spritzer-shaped iPhone cases, and wearing copious amounts of pop-culture iconography (McDonald's logos, cartoons, etc.). A half-hour before the signing, we caught up with Scott in the T Room and found that the man himself, who hails from Missouri, is as darling and inspired as the clothing he designs. YOUR WORK IS WEARABLE ART. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF AN ARTIST? I long ago abandoned the pretense that there's an ego or haughtiness to calling yourself an artist. I am an artist. I use fabric and runway shows; these are the tools I use as an artist when I create my work. Art doesn't have to be hanging on a wall. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JEREMY SCOTT AND MOSCHINO? A good analogy would be a subway station in New York. These trains are going through the city and sometimes they stop at, say, West Fourth Street. They both stop. Let people on. Let people off. But they keep going and end up somewhere else. That's kind of how I look at it. It's all running through me, but [Jeremy Scott and Moschino] have different final destinations. You may end up uptown or you may end up downtown, depending on which train you get on. HOW DO YOU YOU KNOW FORTY FIVE TEN AND OWNER BRIAN BOLKE. We first met in New York when he was there for the shows. He is so passionate and so supportive and, in a way, took me under his wing here. ASIDE FROM BRIAN BOLKE AND NANCY ROGERS, ARE THERE OTHER PEOPLE IN TOWN WHOM YOU'RE EXCITED TO CATCH UP WITH? Tina [Craig], of course. She has been a big supporter. Cindy and Howard [Rachofsky] are so lovely. They are the epitome of hospitality.
