DECORATION BUZZ IN A BOX Workplace Solutions in West Ave NASH BAKER PHOTOGRAPHY, COURTESY THE ARTISTS AND MCCLAIN GALLERY T his summer's most ethereal show makes you want to hitch a ride on SpaceX's mission to Mars. "Radiant Space" at McClain Gallery recalls the Light and Space artists from the 1960s — some of whom are present here — and reminds us why that work is optimistic and timeless. Populated by second-gen members of the school — as well as the king of the vapor box, Larry Bell — the exhibition is an investigation into abstraction, a sublime and planetary orbit with sculptural work that teeters toward minimalism with the pow of new materials (urethane, blow- molded acrylic, vaporized quartz on glass) that serve as vessels for incandescent chambers of color. A fresh discovery, Puerto Rican-raised, L.A.-based Gisela Colón, creates curvaceous space capsules that almost steal the show from the eight other talents (all male). She's also the subject of a traveling museum solo that touches down next summer at Roswell Museum and Art Center in New Mexico (June 30 – September 24, 2017). Other best bets include De Wain Valentine, Colón's mentor, who has been rediscovered thanks to the Getty-funded "Pacific Standard Time," and Houston's international Christian Eckart, returning to a series of fractured framed works fabricated on aluminum that hover between painting and sculpture. Anspon WONDERS WOVEN In late July, Germany-based furniture company Dedon opens its first Houston showroom in Decorative Center Houston. A Dallas showroom opened last month, as part of a national rollout that includes Boston, Chicago and Miami. The towering ceilings in the Houston showroom are designed to showcase Dedon's sought-after hanging seating, such as NestRest and SwingRest, which come in one- and two-seater versions. Dedon was founded in 1990 by a German soccer pro turned entrepreneur, and its high-tech synthetic fibers are woven into furniture by skilled rattan artisans on the island of Cebu in the Philippines. The combination of New World technology with Old World craftsmanship revolutionized outdoor furniture; Dedon's woven tables and chairs are now considered iconic. The company is also known for collaborating with designers such as Philippe Starck and Jean-Marie Massaud to produce fresh looks. For Spring 2016, Dedon has launched four new collections, including lounge seating by modular design master Toan Nguyen, who also recently created a contemporary collection for Fendi Casa. Rebecca Sherman H ouston artist/ designer Liz Marsh debuted a collection of graphic black- and-white lamps at the Architectural Digest Design Show in NYC in March. They caught the eye of AD editors, who included them in a website post of "10 Gems" discovered at the show. "I would never have imagined being included in a list with Damien Hirst," says Marsh. She produced a line of découpaged lamps in the '90s for Brunschwig & Fils and Baker Furniture; she returned to lighting design two years ago after a hiatus that included stints managing Jimmy Choo and Bottega Veneta boutiques in Houston and six years in Paris, exporting antiques and leading shopping tours. Her three collections are inspired by Parisian style. The black-and- white lamps from her Pops collection were sparked by striped awnings at the Palais Royal in Paris. Old Money is a hipper version of the chalked white and basalt of Wedgwood; the climbing vines hearken back to her house in Paris. Stoneware lamps in white, black and gray from her Paris Now collection contrast with the splendor of 19th-century Hausssmann- era apartments. The lamps are crafted in Texas from hand-blown glass and stoneware, with hand-turned wood bases and gold-gilt or silver-leaf caps. Marsh does the verre églomisé (reverse painting on glass) herself. The shades are also custom-made, including one in lacquered paper for Pops. "To me, they are functional works of art," says Marsh, who customizes colors, patterns, materials and sizes on request.
