They bought a few new pieces, such as the jade elephant stool in the entry, but reupholstered others. A big sectional was cut in half and brilliantly transformed into a pair of chaises. Often, just moving furniture and art around makes all the difference. "Many things I've owned for years. Even my own mother didn't recognize them," Fourticq says. "The colors and finishes we chose for the new apartment, and just the fact they were in a different environment, made it feel totally new." Recently, a friend noticed his Marilyn Minter photograph over the mantel and exclaimed, "'My god, that's incredible, where did you get it?'" Fourticq recalls, laughing. "I've owned that piece for 15 years." "Basically everything's the same," Brackeen says. "It's just a whole new canvas." (continued from page 49)
