10 letter editor HUNT SLONEM Y ou say whaaaaat! It is April 15 as I write this, one week from the start of Texas Design Week Houston and the PaperCity Design Awards celebration to present the winning entries. This evening, I was reading through the judges' com- ments, which I find one of the most interesting aspects of the awards program — and one of most compelling reasons to enter: It's a review of a project by some of today's great decorating minds. Each of our judges brings a different perspective. Miles Redd is laugh out loud … so wry and clever. Alex Papachristidis is very thoughtful and encouraging. Ray Booth of McAlpine looks closely at how architecture and design work together. Dara Caponigro, Schumacher's creative director, zeroes in on fabric, pattern, and color. Joe Nahem is the most verbose of the judges, with great insight and detailed comments. Gen and Benjamin Sohr of Pencil & Paper Creative Development chose wonderful detail to expound upon. Observations and comments run the gamut. Here are some of our favorites: "Love the architectural design and resolution." • "Like the simplicity of the interiors … a great complement to the architecture." • "Strong architectural use of black is a fantastic contrast to the warmth of the wood and is a great reflection of how interior design and architectural design can and should meld together and support each other." • "Whimsical, charming use of space that combines some of my favorite motifs; love chinoiserie and animal prints, and I'm a sucker for blue and white." • "This is a place where I would like to have a long dinner and linger with friends." • "Having been down the 'get it done in six weeks' road myself, I say bravo to this team. The clients must be thrilled and relieved." • "What a great transformation. This team really brought originality and personality to every space in this project." • "I would love to be invited here (and I would show up, too)." • "It appears someone really knew what they were doing here." • "Using the client's own artwork in a creative but not sentimental fashion is never easy to do. Well done." • "Stylish, sculptural, unique." • "I also love the way the art is hung … très jolie." • "Glamorous and functional, always a great combo." • "The shapely headboard is to die for." • "The serene space lowers your blood pressure in an instant. Pure fun." And then there's: "Who puts a coffee cup at a place setting?" • "Curious and odd, but a point of view!" • "No one lives here!" Thank you to the almost 300 design firms that entered, and to our wonderful sponsors: Porcelanosa, Circa Lighting, Heritage Auctions, The Shade Store, The Post Oak Hotel, and Baccarat. Watch for the winning projects to be published in the October issue of PaperCity. Holly Moore Editor in Chief holly@papercitymag.com
