F ondation Louis Vuitton in Paris celebrates one of the most important fi gures in 20th-century design, Charlotte Perriand (1903- 1999), in a groundbreaking exhibition on view through February 24, 2020. Hailed for her pioneering work in furniture and longstanding association with Le Corbusier, Perriand was also a thought leader, environmentalist, and feminist — aspects of her life explored here. It's a deep dive into one of the most fascinating minds of the last century, covering her most important design works while developing a narrative around her life through the incorporation of art, architecture, and historical context. Like her life, the "Charlotte Perriand: Inventing a New World" exhibition is expansive. "The Ideal Apartment" in Gallery 1 focuses on her early works, including collaborations with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret on the iconic chaise longue and fauteuil grand confort armchair that were presented at the 1929 Salon d'Automne. Gallery 2 takes us to the 1930s, where we fi nd a designer in search of better living spaces. Decrying "the great misery of LA TOILE DE CHARLOTTE designed in Rio to her innovative design for the Les Arcs in Savoie ski resort in France, where she integrated the buildings into the slopes to encourage contemplation of the Alpine peaks.
