Recently, on a lazy Sunday and after several Bloody Marys at Joe's, I was wandering the chic fashion and design shops on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach with a decorator friend of mine (yes, there's much more to Venice Beach than tattoo parlors and Muscle Beach). In one cool interior shop, my friend lingered, took pictures of a couch and other items, and directed a lot of questions to the sales associate. I thought this was research for a client. But, boy, has the process in the retailing world been turned on its head by the internet. A recent article on CNN.com called "Will 'Showrooming' Kill Businesses?" caught my attention. Seems there is a growing trend whereby consumers waltz into retail stores, take pictures of items they are coveting, ask salespeople questions, touch and feel merchandise, then leave and search online for the same item to purchase — hopefully at a lower cost or for easier delivery. One store owner said he knows this is happening when he gets a call from someone who asks for an exact style name or item number — he knows they are typing the information into a search engine! Shame on that customer. Stores provide a retail experience. Beautiful, well-merchandised stores provide a respite from the outside world and allow you to dream of what that couch, dress or TV may mean in your life. Art Scent A Dozen Roses — the fragrance collection launched last year by Sandy Cataldo and Lynn Welsh Emmolo (founders of multi-brand and business development firm 360 Degrees) — has added another rose to their existing trilogy. Electron is a light, refreshing scent that sparks with green tea, violet, cattalyea orchid, musk and, of course, rose. But the bottle is what electrifies us: Created by Emmolo, it redefines the art of the perfume bottle with its bold and graphic use of color in the depiction of its namesake blossom. Seth Vaughan Calling all beef lovers: Good 2 Go Taco owners Colleen O'Hare and Jeana Johnson and Barcadia owners Brooke Humphries and Brianna Larson have collaborated on a new concept at McKinney and Monticello. Acme F&B offers the first "whole animal allocation program" of its kind in Texas, which means the protein on Acme's menu changes throughout the evening (from steak to sweetbreads, for example), and cuts from the same animal are shared with O'Hare and Johnson's other restaurants, Good 2 Go Taco and Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burgers. Along with ethical-meat practices, Acme is devoted to serving seasonal, local and sustainable food. Try grilled asparagus with roasted beet mimosa salad, braised rabbit with three onion risotto jus or chicken and dumplings with rainbow chard gnocchi and summer chilled green gazpacho, served in a suitably rustic decor. Acme F&B also offers up two bars with more than 26 wines by the glass, 24 beers on tap and 12 specialty cocktails — try Summer Crush with Tito's, blackberries and basil, or the Blueberry Lemon Cooler with Limoncello, blueberries, mint and soda.
