JENNY ANTILL Bubbles 31 cocktail lounge & Bons Mots 31, 87 Highland Park Village, 214.420.3903; lounge31dallas.com Alberto Lombardi's newest accomplishment is 31, a Eurocentric champagne and cocktail lounge atop Bistro 31 in Highland Park Village. Lombardi collaborated with Duncan Miller Ullman to transform the second story into a stylish drinks boîte, with a patio that features a retractable awning, tufted wingback sofas and Carrera marble bar. Beneath the mid-century-inspired chandeliers, more than 20 varieties of bubbly and sparkling wines are on offer, along with any good Europhile's pablum: exquisite caviar and foie gras. Champagne concoctions and specialty libations abound — we love the martini with fresh watermelon juice, melon liquor, citrus vodka and lemon juice. Chef Eric Brandt crafted the menu, with divine snapper and mango ceviche, lobster sliders, cilantro and duck meatballs, and a rock shrimp and watermelon cocktail. Ciao…. We're firing up the Vespa now. Kitty Kay Restaurant Buzz Art Notes Divorce Papers + Design: It's a wild, inventive ride as Dallas dealers roll out often steamy fare mid-summer. Begin with Kristy Stubbs Gallery's Highland Park Village Pop-Up, showcasing heartthrob Spaniard José-María Cano, whose encaustic works on canvas adroitly marry image and text — the subject is the artist's own divorce. (You'll be amazed.) Cano also scintillates with a series of paintings, "Why Rent When You Can Buy?," which recreate ads for call girls and ladies of the evening, filtered through a detached post-Pop sensibility (through July 28) ... We're also mad for the psychedelia of San Francisco–based painter/graphic designer Rex Ray, whose way with shape, line and color has appeared everywhere from SFMOMA to Swatch watch faces and CD packaging for David Bowie. Now it's here at Conduit Gallery. Sharing the limelight with Ray are recent Central Trak talent Gabriel Dawe, who presents some new pin-encrusted sculptures, and nuanced San Francisco woodblock printmaker Jill Storthz (all on view through August 31) ... While you're in the Design District, check out Sun to Moon Rex Ray's Psoroderma, 2012, at Conduit Gallery Gallery, whose sole focus is photography. "Antiquarian AvantGarde Photography: Works by the North Texas Alternative Process Group" offers a compelling group view of nine current lensmen who pair contemporary subject matter with 19th- and early-20th-century processes, from casein and cyanotype to gum bichromate and wet-plate collodion. These works bear lush, rich surfaces that invoke times past (July 19 – August 18; opening night, Saturday, July 21). Sunflower City: Make tracks to Oak Cliff to catch the final hours of Cynthia Mulcahy and Robert Hamilton's inspired art + farming + community project "Seventeen Hundred Seeds," as 1,700 Aztec Gold sunflowers go to seed — literally — on a vacant lot at 715 W. Davis Street. What could be more glorious than this artwork, which has significant implications for curatorial practice and the artist's role in real life ... Museum Mile: At the Dallas Museum of Art, everyone is buzzing about the George Grosz show, expertly curated by the DMA's Heather MacDonald, which presents an utterly fascinating view of mid-century Dallas when a European expressionist and Dadaist turned his sights on this fair city. The exhibition also signals an early coming together of commerce and culture. See what happened when department store scion Leon Harris Jr. of Harris and Company (later Sanger-Harris) coaxed Grosz to town in 1952 to undertake a commission (through August 19) ... Wrap up your museum viewing in Fort Worth, where the Amon Carter Museum of American Art's "American Vanguards" gives center stage to the under-known John Graham, alongside Stuart Davis, Arshile Gorky and the mighty de Kooning, as well as others in the Graham orbit during the pivotal years of 1927 through 1942 (through August 19) ... Frontal Gaze: In a real coup for a Texas institution, "Lucian Freud: Portraits" arrives at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Organized by the National Portrait Gallery, London, in association with The Modern, this tour de force presents one of the greatest portraitists of our time. Ninety works, spanning 1943 through 2011, reveal Freud and his unflinchingly observed subjects. Talk about the way of all flesh (July 1 – October 28; museum closed July 4). Not since Alice Neel was showcased at the Museum José-María Cano's Laura (Why Rent When You Can Buy?), 2010, of Fine Arts, Houston, in 2010, have we had such a searing look at the at Kristy Stubbs Gallery human figure and a window into the sitter's psyche. Catherine D. Anspon We envision whiling away a sultry evening on the outdoor patio at Park Tavern. Opening at The Shops at Park Lane come July 9, this spacious watering hole begs the question: Which of the 40 beers on tap will pair best with the lamb French dip or crispy chicken tacos? … Say hola to Monica's Nueva Cocina. Chef Hector Hernandez recreates some of owner Monica Greene's fave dishes from her former eatery, Monica's Aca y Alla. But we can't wait to tuck into new menu items such as taquitos dorados de pato (duck carnitas, pasilla sauce, avocado tomatillo sauce and watercress salad) and poc chuc (think grilled citrus marinade pork chop, chiltomate sauce saffron rice and Yucatan black beans). Or they'll go sans eye makeup — save for mascara, natch — and grab Coralista (sheer coral) for a bit of pow. At Macy's, Sephora; benefitcosmetics.com. Rachael Abrams and Taylor Friedman [ [ RAP JULY | PAGE 6 | 2012 Designer and mother Ariane Goldman has cracked the pregnancy style dilemma with her smart new collection, Hatch. We would love it for the name alone, but the 18 easy pieces chicly cover a blossoming baby bump — and believe it or not, become a closet staple post-pregnancy. No, really. In fact, you don't even have to be pregnant to lust after the dreamy strapless gown in palest mint silk, the long tank dress in French nautical stripes, the dinner party dress, caftan or jumper — each one chicer than the next, with or without a baby on board — in colors such as sandalwood, fawn, melon, cobalt, navy and black. Hatch donates $5 from each purchase on its Web site to Every Mother Counts, an organization that seeks to improve maternal health worldwide. $78 to $368, at hatchcollection.com.
