L ily Lanahan's new collection of limited-edition linen napkins and placemats is made on the tiny Portuguese island of Madeira, where artisans sew each by hand using traditional methods of hand appliqué and embroidery. Launching her new company, Elizabeth Lake, was challenging enough, but Lanahan — who grew up in Preston Hollow — did it from another continent and in the middle of a pandemic. She had been commuting between Dallas and Sydney, Australia, where she and her fiancé relocated for his company when the borders closed earlier this year. "Launching a Dallas-based business from Australia with a European supply chain in the middle of a pandemic is probably the most adventurous thing I've done," she says. Inspired by Old Hollywood glamour, vintage cigarette cases, gold lighters, and evening clutches, the capsule collection makes use of perforated and engraved metal and Fendi's legendary leatherworking techniques to create cases and small accessories for mobile phones, earbuds, and other small devices, which can then be attached to Fendi belts, chains, and handbags. Steven Hempel hasn't deterred her creativity: For the holidays, she introduced charming hand-blown glass candleholders that double as vases, the first in an ongoing design collaboration with LagunaB in Venice. An alum of The Episcopal School of Dallas and SMU's Cox School of Business, Lanahan studied decorative arts through Christie's Education London and the University of Glasgow, where she received a master of arts degree. "My time in London was an amazing opportunity to study furniture, textiles, silver, and porcelain in a way that was really hands-on," she says.
