T his month, David and Ann Sutherland open their spacious, light-drenched new showroom in Decorative Center Houston, the first move David Sutherland Showroom has made since the showroom was founded in Houston in 1978. They've pulled out all the stops with a 11,700-square-foot corner location and exterior entrance. In addition to favorites lines Ochre, Fortuny, Houlès Paris, Blackman Cruz, Phillip Jeffries, Berman Rosetti, Lorin Marsh, and Mimi London, the new space showcases their newest collection, Ancient & Modern, exquisite, carved marble fireplace mantels. Rebecca Sherman D uring the early 19th century, France was swept up in a frenzy for all things Egyptian, thanks to Napoleon's campaigns there and the work of young scholar Jean-François Champollion, who deciphered hieroglyphics for the first time in 1822. King Charles X was among those bewitched, inaugurating a new Egyptian museum at his Louvre palace in Paris and appointing Champollion as director. Now French textile house Pierre Frey has launched a stunning new collection in collaboration with the Louvre museum, honoring the 200th anniversary of Champollion's discoveries. The collection, Merveilles d'Egypte, includes wallpapers, fabrics, and rugs, with faithful reproductions of Egyptian artifacts from the museum, along with fanciful interpretations created by Pierre Frey studio and artist Louis Barthélémy.
