IGNACIA GUEST HOUSE AND ORIGINARIO DESIGN SHOP By Steven Hempel Photography Leandro Bulzzano and Gabriel Cabrera TWO DESIGN JEWELS IN THE SPIRIT OF MEXICO CITY I gnacia Guest House and Originario are two small design jewels in the sea of Mexico City's culture, vibrant colors, art, and design. In this setting, Ignacia Guest House, owned by Gina Lozada, serves as a tranquil oasis that feels part of yet gently removed from the maelstrom that awaits just outside the gated entry. Named for Ignacia, who was the housekeeper to the estate for more than 70 years, the historical 1913 bed and breakfast features five unique guest rooms, a lush courtyard, and strikingly appointed chromatic sitting and dining areas. Located in Colonia Roma, it sits along tree-lined streets with boutiques, galleries, bars, churches, and galleries. It's from Ignacia Guest House that Originario design shop evolved. Lozada, along with Andrés Gutiérrez, are the proprietors of Originario, and it's Gutiérrez's furniture creations that are in the common areas of Ignacia Guest House. We sat down with Gutiérrez to discuss their inspiring new shop, a vibrant platform for emerging creatives such as Comité de Proyectos, Chuch, Bestia, Piedra Fuego, Mely Ávila, Baron & Vicario, Editora Nacional, Flama, and AG Studio. B a c k g r o u n d a n d d e s i g n philosophy. AG: I'm from Guanajuato, México, and I studied industrial and interior design. I moved to Mexico City when I was 23 and created my own interior design studio. I started off designing residential projects and now work primarily design commercial projects. Most recently, I've designed boutique hotels like Ignacia Guest House and Casa Hoyos in San Miguel de Allende. My goal in each project is to honor and to resignify my country's aesthetic and culture. An essential part of my creative approach is the color and the folklore of our traditions. Inspiration for Originario. AG: It started with the idea of an alternative shop carrying Mexican interior design and showcasing the Originario carries the design work of some of Mexico's top creatives. (Continued) 38
