Anspon Carlos Cruz-Diez at Sicardi Ayers Bacino: The late Latin American light master gets his due at the gallery that has championed him from its opening in the '90s. Three epic canvases say it all by the artist whose international foundation is headquartered in Houston, thanks in large part to Sicardi Ayers Bacino (through December 22). David Aylsworth at Inman Gallery: You can't talk about Texas painters without having this Houston talent high on the list. Catch his latest solo at Inman, which also includes a site-specific installation — a reading and listening nook with vintage turntable and framed fan letter from Stephen Sondheim — among uniquely hued canvases that flirt with abstraction while nodding to Broadway show tunes (through January 13). Javier Marín at Art of the World Gallery: Let's go for Baroque. This Mexico City-based, Venice Biennale-exhibited artist, primarily a sculptor, makes a grand statement with dramatic bronze busts, including a suite of heroic heads installed outside the gallery entrance. What's new are works in PET plastic, vividly colored, disassembled then reassembled into a patchwork quilt composing each classically inspired head. Positively Pop, we say (through January 6). Kehinde Wiley at the MFAH: The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston continues to roll out the riches. This fall's coup is the arrival of a national touring exhibition organized by Fine Arts Museums, San Francisco: "Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence," following its West Coast premiere. Heroic paintings and bronzes speak to violence against young Black people around the world; the artist forges fresh elegies and monuments culled from art history that command our attention and demand we wake up (extended view, through May 27). CAMH Doubleheader: It doesn't get better than this. Contemporary Arts Museum Houston marks its 75th year with "Six Scenes from Our Future," co-curated by the museum's R e b e c c a M a t a l o n and Patricia Restrepo with Rice curatorial fellow Ginevra B r i a . T h e h a l f - d o z e n p r o t a g o n i s t s span generations, reflecting racial and gender diversity, and all have Texas connections: Mel Chin, JooYoung Choi, Leslie Hewitt, Lisa Lapinski, Jill Magid, and Leslie Martinez. Their works, many of which were commissioned for this milestone show, dialogue with the museum's past as a Mecca for art, architecture, and design, while promulgating a layered take on the issues of our time. From an engagement ring formed from the late Mexican architect Luis Barragán's ashes to a reenacted swimming pool as lounging pod inspired by the '90s prime time soap Melrose Place, there's much to unpack here (through March 17). At press time we're making plans for a walk-through of "This Way" with CAMH curator Mich Stephenson, who organized an ambitious response by 12 Black Houston artists to the legacy and heritage of Houston Freedmen's Town. Fifth-generation Freedmen's Town resident Charonda Johnson lends support as one of the artists, as well as engagement manager with the Freedmen's Town Conservancy (December 8 – March 24). Reading Material: Art books by Houston authors make our list of must-haves for our own libraries and gifting, including recent volumes on Tony Feher drawings by gallerist Josh Pazda, HSPVA at 50 by artist Amy C. Evans, and a cheeky collab by two top contemporary conceptual talents, Houston's Jack Massing and NYC/Maine-based William Wegman.
