TEXAS DESIGN WEEK HOUSTON IS A TICKETED EVENT. TO PURCHASE TICKETS, AND FOR COMPLETE SCHEDULE, GO TO TEXASDESIGNWEEK.COM. Texas Design Week Houston B ritish fashion designer Giles Deacon — an acclaimed couturier with a penchant for dark and sensuous looks, wild prints, and pop culture references — is also a costumer for the New York City Ballet and Lionsgate Films and an illustrator whose work has appeared in Vogue, The New York Times, and Interview Magazine. His new collection of upholstery fabrics, wallpapers, and velvets for the 164-year-old British textiles house Sanderson blends "eccentricity, decadence, and comfort in equal measure," he says. The collection includes commissioned artworks and new iterations of archival jacquards and prints from his own studio and the Sanderson archive. Classic florals along with Surrealism and medieval and Greek mythological references are woven throughout, as is the worn and fading grandeur of the English manor house. Almost a dozen different designs for wallpapers and fabrics include Pygmalion, a four-panel scenic mural that depicts a tromp l'oeil curtain drawn back to reveal an astonishing world of rococo dolphins, giant artichokes, fennel, garlic bulbs, mollusk shells, strings of pearls, feathers, and stag beetles. Aurelia's Grail wallpaper is made from heavy, embellished jacquard featuring meticulously detailed Tudor beasts — unicorns, yales, capuchins, pygmy parrots, and Japanese Chin dogs, all entwined with English roses and vines. Deacon plays on the classic Sanderson stripe with Regency Aperigon, a celebration of the ancient sartorial pattern that's updated here with a subtle sawtooth edge.
