I nterior designer Marie Flanigan i s k n o w n f o r designing interiors that exhibit quiet luxury. Sixteen of these projects, from Flanigan's own Houston home to a Jackson Hole retreat, are cataloged in her second book, The Perfect Room: Timeless Designs for Intentional Living (Rizzoli), out this month. Architect Jeffrey Dungan wrote the foreword, in which he says he was first introduced to Flanigan's work while serving as a judge for the PaperCity Design Awards. He realized later that he had voted to "award every project she had entered because of the simplicity and clarity of her vision … Her interiors emanate from a place of quiet and calm." In her new book, Flanigan details how to make each room in a home into a beautiful and functional space that is a direct interpretation of the family who lives there. Throughout the book, she shares tangible ways to tell a story through thoughtful interiors. Entrance halls, for example, should relate to the exterior architecture and offer instant insight into a home's personality — is it a space that calls for traditional wide reclaimed-wood planks or gleaming marble checkerboard? F l a n i g a n , w h o was trained as an architect, details her holistic approach, c o n s i d e r i n g geographic and a r c h i t e c t u r a l context and how rooms relate to other rooms alongside function and beauty to create a unified and serene retreat.
