COCKTAILS WITH BRITISH DESIGNER NICOLA HARDING NEW TEXTILES & BOOK SIGNING AT JAMES CABANA E ntering its 13th y e a r, R e d & White Gallery i n Fa y e t t ev i l l e has carved out a unique niche in rural Texas as an improbable yet important destination for both established and emerging talent. Marquee names (sculptor Jesús Moroles, photographer Laura Wilson, landscape painter William Anzalone, and hometown ceramicist Pat Johnson) are joined by fresh discoveries, including Austin- based painter Ana Stapleton in her debut exhibition at Joan and Jerry Herring's art space this spring. Born in Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico, and raised in Eagle Pass, Stapleton attended a private all- girls prep school in San Antonio, where she was challenged to navigate two competing cultures — a narrative that informs her droll folkloric paintings, which she views as loose self-portraits. Today, Stapleton is amassing commissions from private collectors in Texas, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Washington. "For this show," the artist says, "I've explored the idea of persona/identity: the selves we long to be, the ones we embrace, the ones we hide from." She then adds a feminist twist and riotous color. "Persona also means 'person' in Spanish. I like the wordplay of it — the tension between cultural ex p e c t a t i o n s f o r M ex i c a n women (be polite, agreeable, demure) versus being a fully expressed person in the world with opinions, flaws, and noise." "Ana Stapleton: Persona," artist reception Saturday, March 7, 3 – 6 pm, at Red & White Gallery, 102 W. Main Street, on the historic town square, Fayetteville; through Saturday, April 11; redandwhitegalleryonline.com. Catherine D. Anspon.
