51 T here is seemingly not a block in Milan that doesn't tell the story of design throughout the centuries. Such is the case with Palazzo Olivazzi, an 18th-century late-Baroque building in the city's historic center, with an arched entryway originally designed for horse-drawn carriages. It's an unexpected setting for a treasure of modernist design: an intact apartment designed in the 1940s by architect and furniture designer Osvaldo Borsani, a towering figure of Italian modernism. The apartment — a private home that had never been opened to the public — served as the setting for an exhibition of furniture by Interni Venosta, the collection designed by Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci of the influential Dimorestudio. Borsani's vision for the space remains largely intact, down to the smallest details, from the moldings and built-in cabinetry to the lighting and a remarkable crown-topped vitrine filled with porcelain. The apartment's pièce de résistance is a sculptural fireplace niche: a wood-clad cocoon with a brick hearth topped by a ceramic bas-relief and flanked by a pair of built-in seats. The original furniture in the apartment mingled seamlessly with Interni Venosta's minimalist sofas, lacquered wood tables, and polished steel vases.
