The Roaring '20s Redux: The Junior League's 50th anniversary Ball was the bee's knees and the cat's pajamas. Derek Louden Emily Stark Stephen Stark he famous Baker Hotel that once stood downtown may be long gone, but for generations of social cliques, the Baker's legendary Peacock Terrace ballroom is unforgettable. What was once the setting for the most roaring soirées — debutante balls, late-night swing parties, even Petroleum Club events — served as the inspiration for The Junior League's 50th anniversary ball, "A Night at the Peacock Terrace, Circa 1922." Fast forward a half-century and envision the Omni Dallas Hotel, which had its neon LED-light Poorya façade lit with "JLD" for the to-do. Inside, the Fazel Trinity Ballroom was filled with the circle of Camille Fazel past and present Junior Leaguers — honorary chairman Dianne Cash, Hayley Louden, Amy Turner, Paige and John Slates, Alicia and Scott Wood, plus the Oscar de la Renta– clad ball chairman Elizabeth Gambrell and husband Eric. Event master Tom Addis decorated the ballroom in full Peacock Terrace style. Even the night's musical component had flapper-era flare, with starring act Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks (they won a Grammy Award for their songs on the HBO hit Boardwalk Empire). In the spirit of bootlegging and speakeasies, JLD staged an under-the-radar after-party in the Omni's Katy Trail Room. Admittance was granted to a select few hundred — chairmen Jennifer Wright, Jacqueline Hill, and Paige Westhoff, plus Megan and Bill Fleming, Sara and Chris Fredericks, Allie and Trint Smith, Chelsea and Brad Carpenter — via secret password. The furtive moniker whispered among guests? Eva O'Neill. She was the inaugural president of The Junior League of Dallas. And if anyone asks, you didn't hear it from us.
