At Houston Design Center, 7026 Old Katy Road; Alkusari Stone, Showroom 229. When the Stars Align Za Za Za Zara's Back! Z ara, 5085 Westheimer Road in the Galleria, 713.439.0995, zara.com Imagine our disdain when we went to the Galleria last spring to spruce up our summer wardrobe, only to find that our favorite fast-fashion go- to, Zara, was closed till fall for renovation. Closed! How could we survive the summer without the original, the incomparable, the easily paired-with-all-things-high-end- fashionable Zara? But now this juggernaut is back — and bigger than ever: The previously 9,735-square-foot store has expanded to an exhilarating 18,996 square feet. The downstairs entrance is exactly where it used to be, on Level 1 next to Sephora, but now there's also a second-floor entrance, next to Victoria's Secret. Downstairs is now dedicated to ladies with more apparel, more accessories, more fragrance, more jewelry and — thankfully — more dressing rooms. Upstairs encompasses the space of three prior stores and is divided into a larger men's section and an all-new department for children and babies (three months and up). With three times the number of cash registers — two stations up and one large one down — even checking out is quicker and easier. Basically, everything you already know and love about Zara is bigger, better and just, well, more. Caroline Starry LeBlanc Robert Couturier Nancy Braithwaite Social Whirl Going Places With Carlos Souza Carlos Souza at MoMA with artwork by Ellsworth Kelly V alentino's worldwide brand ambassador Carlos Souza debuts his book Carlos's Places (Assouline, $45) this month. This globetrotting expert wears many hats aside from his Valentino chapeau: creative director and CEO of his own jewelry design company, Most Wanted Design; editor at large for Architectural Digest; and contributing editor for Interview. In this book, he details his favorite places to dine, shop, dance and admire art in such glamorous spots as Rome, Paris, New York, Shanghai and São Paulo, with travel- diary notes that let us roam the world through his refined eye. As Michael Roberts pens in the foreword: "… for all who thrill to a nonstop agenda of sun-kissed lotus-eating, louche nightclubbing, couture fittings and impressively deep perma-tanning, Carlos (a firm believer in living well being the best revenge) provides a celebratory peephole into all these otherworldly lifestyles through his one-of-a-kind lens." The bon viveur author will sign his book and impart info on best bars in Rio and chicest beaches in St. Barts at the Valentino boutique in the Galleria Thursday, October 23, by invitation only.
